Purchasing a Labrador Retriever puppy has the potential to be a substantial investment, but this is not always the case. Well-known for being a very versatile breed with many different uses, there is a very wide price range for a Labrador Retriever.

Buying a Labrador directly from a specialized breeder can be anywhere from $500 to more than $1000, but there are many factors that must be considered when looking at this seemingly high price tag. Some breeders go through extensive lengths to guarantee a puppy’s future quality as a show dog, tracking dog or a water rescue dog. Breeders also attempt to eradicate common health problems that Labradors face later in their life span.

If a show dog or service animal is not what you are looking for, there are other, far less expensive options for purchasing a Labrador. Local sellers can often be found in newspapers and their prices most often do not exceed $300 and in some cases, Labrador puppies can even be given away for free. However, even a free puppy has its hidden costs. Registering a new dog license, along with vaccines, food and other pet related costs can add $200-$300 to even a free animal.

In the end, the main determining factor of a Labrador’s price is the animals intended use. An animal bred to be more predisposed to save lives, has an understandably higher cost than a family house pet. Regardless of price however, most owners say that their Labrador Retrievers were well worth the cost; a good Labrador can be a family’s best friend, an invaluable rescue animal or a prized competition specimen
